Resumo
No texto que de seguida se apresenta serão inicialmente referidos alguns dos marcos
históricos relacionados com a intervenção psicológica na dor crónica. Seguidamente
proceder-se-à à descrição e revisão de algumas das intervenções efectuadas em pacien-
tes que apresentam diferentes tipos de diagnóstico com o sintoma de dor crónica.
Inicialmente, serão referidas as intervenções nas quais a localização e a etiologia da dor
não são especificadas. Num segundo foco, examinaremos o caso da dor lombar, referindo
estudos que especificam o lugar da dor mas não a sua etiologia; aqui apresentaremos um
estudo português. De seguida, vamos considerar as intervenções realizadas no caso de
“dor ideopática”, na qual a etiologia se presume ser psicológica. Por último, vamos
abordar, brevemente, a intervenção farmacológica uma vez que esta poderá actuar de
uma forma sinergética com as diversas intervenções psicológicas. Será debatida a
importância do trabalho em equipas multidisciplinares em Unidades de Dor.

Summary
In the following article the authors will present some of the historical marks related with the
psychological intervention in chronic pain patients. Next they proceed to the description
and critical revision of some of the implemented interventions with patients that present
different aetiologies for their chronic pain. Initially, the interventions presented don’t refer a
specific pain location, but then a focus will be made on the specific case of chronic lumbar
pain (one of the most presented in literature); at this point a Portuguese study with patients
with chronic lumbar pain will be presented and is implications discussed. Then the authors
will consider some of the interventions implemented in cases described as “idiopathic
pain”. Finally, some considerations are made regarding pharmacological interventions and
the way it can be associated with a psychological intervention as a form of increasing
the therapeutical effects. Concluding the authors will reflect upon the data favouring the
importance of a multidisciplinary team work in Chronic Pain Units.
